The Treasurer and Tax Collector Addresses Community Concerns About Unregulated Short Term Rentals

The Los Angeles County Treasurer and Tax Collector (TTC) serves as the lead enforcement agency for the Short-Term Rental (STR) Ordinance in Unincorporated Areas of the County. The TTC is responsible for ensuring that STR operators and platforms comply with County’s regulations, which aim to promote public safety and maintain neighborhood quality of life.

The STR Ordinance became effective on October 7, 2024. Since then, all STR properties in the Unincorporated Areas of the County are required to be registered. Operating an STR without proper registration may result in enforcement actions, including noncompliance fees and administrative fines. STR platforms such as Airbnb and Verbo are also subject to enforcement actions for noncompliance with the County’s ordinance.

The TTC actively monitors STR activity, investigates complaints, and enforces compliance with the Ordinance. The TTC, working with a vendor, is also able to receive complaints through a 24-hour complaint hotline at STR Online Complaint Website or (213) 371-1070. While the TTC may coordinate with other County departments, such as Regional Planning, Fire, and the Sheriff, for specific investigations or actions, TTC retains primary enforcement responsibility.
